|
The purpose of this study is to find out the effects of Orff musical activities on mentally retarded teenagers in general girls' high schools. More precisely, the goal was to determine how much musical therapy improves their cognitive and athletic ability and thereby helps them to better manage their school life. The subjects of the study were 6 teenagers ranging in age from 15 to 18 years old and attending a special class in C girls' high school located in downtown Daejeon. A total of 15 sessions of the Orff musical activities were carried out, and the data was obtained from a video which had recorded the progress of the musical therapy. In addition, It was analyzed also based on this video. Selecting a qualitative research method, this study analyzed recorded material and interpreted the meanings. To serve as the mentally retarded teenagers' musical activities, the Orff musical program used in this study was reconstructed by the researcher from the Orff musical program made by Korea Orff Music Association. As presented above, it is apparent that the Orff musical herapy is a great help for mentally retarded teenagers who significantly fall behind when it comes to cognitive or athletic capacity compared to other non-handicapped teenagers for it improves cognitive ability through training programs such as speaking, singing, playing musical instruments, appreciating music, and also athletic ability from physical expression. Above all, it is our hope that many different approaches to musical therapy as well as these Orff musical activities can be useful for mentally retarded teenagers so that they may have a pleasant school life together with non-handicapped students.
